The Incredible Hulk #1 (1964)
The Hulk was a bridge between the monster comics MARVEL had been doing and the super hero books that were about to replace them. Both Kirby and Lee would claim to come up with the idea, though both cited Jekyll/Hyde and Frankenstein as inspirations.
The Hulk’s success was not immediately evident and initial sales were disappointing. But there was something irresistible about the gray skinned (in the first ish, and green thereafter) creature. He was powerful and yet more human than the other monsters in comic books at the time.
The Hulk was canceled after only six issues but the readers would be the ones to demand his return.
